Abstract
As part of an investigation of the effects of tip clearance performance of development axial flow compressors, a system for detecting rotor blade tip rubs has been developed and a tip clearance measuring system modified to detect clearance changes at a bandwidth of 500 Hz.
Mean clearance changes have been measured as well as changes during surge. Rotor orbit has also been investigated and the system has become an important means of monitoring rotordynamic behaviour. Subharmonic components of rotor orbit have been discovered.
