Abstract
The paper covers the development and implementation of a modern modular brake system suitable for heavy haul locomotives. The background to the system is outlined together with the thinking behind the design. The paper describes the development and some of the testing that the system underwent for operational and compatibility requirements plus the development of the packages for fitting within the locomotive and installation on to a brake equipment frame. The introduction of the equipment into service with different railway authorities is discussed together with its interaction with radio-controlled working. The paper concludes by discussing the success of the concept plus the results of testing on the size of brake pipe exhaust and the effect on air flow of brake pipe diameter. Recommendations are made to reconsider the method of control and to consider the improvements of the introduction of a second feed pipe.
