The paper is concerned with the design of refractories where there are significant pressure and temperature loadings on the structure. The factors that affect the performance of linings are discussed, including the properties of the material as manufactured. Design methods are proposed which enable a suitable lining and pressure vessel combination to be determined for those cases where direct experience is not available. Examples are given to illustrate the design methods.
