Abstract
A procedure is described to design the overall dimensions of a centrifugal impeller. Initial optimization is carried out by minimizing the inlet and discharge Mach numbers. The procedure is developed for a range of possible pressure ratios and the effect of high pressure ratio on the Mach numbers and resultant impeller geometry is discussed. Empirical impeller flow modelling techniques to predict the performance of the proposed design are then briefly reviewed.
