Abstract
The objective of this paper is to determine whether or not maintainability problems exist which are common to different plants within the process industries. An extensive literature survey has been carried out encompassing academic and professional publications. This research has been supported by visits to fourteen production sites. It has been possible to identify items of equipment which commonly are seen to be maintainability problems. The reasons for poor maintainability are analysed with respect to the basic design of equipment and directions for further research are identified.
