In order to remain competitive in demanding markets, industrial companies have to continue to reduce their dependencies on specialized machinery of relatively limited capabilities and introduce general-purpose machines and modules which can be reprogrammed centrally and/or locally.
A review of the type of work required, together with the responses of some manufacturing companies, academic establishments and governmental bodies to this challenge, are the subjects of the present article.
