Abstract
This paper describes the refurbishment of the British Steel Corporation hot strip mill at Port Talbot Works. The problems involved, the options which were considered and the overall planning and management of the project are outlined. The construction, installation and commissioning of the new plant and equipment are described in detail, and the performance of the new mill is reviewed. The prime objectives, which were all achieved, were to increase coil weight and improve product quality with a reduction in costs.
