Abstract
London Transport has had three turbulent years. Despite various political difficulties, the Underground is now operating more reliably than at the beginning of the decade and attracting as much custom as fifteen years ago. A look to the future has led to the development of a strategic plan—resting on improved service, modernization and cost reduction. The paper looks at this process and then goes on to consider how it will affect the Underground's train and station staffing. Proposals for fare collection are described as well as developments in track, signalling and rolling stock.
