Abstract
Having decided against fleet renewal, Strathclyde Passenger Transport Executive and British Rail Scottish Region have embarked on a programme of life extending the Class 303 Glasgow suburban electric multiple units. The work is necessary to combat corrosion, unreliability and dating of the vehicles′ decor. It includes attention to the vehicles′ bodies, floors, wiring, brake pipework, doors, cabs, vans, heating, lighting and seating. The work is being carried out in the British Rail Engineering Limited works at Glasgow. The result is an attractive, modern unit with a further life of fifteen to twenty years, produced at a fraction of the cost of a new one.
