Abstract
The effect of pitch errors on the transmission error of a gear pair has been much studied. In particular, it has been thought that, if pitch error alone is present, the frequency spectrum of the corresponding transmission error will have no components either at the tooth contact frequency or any of its harmonics. This result is here examined, and it is concluded that it is invalid. It is shown that, in general, tooth contact harmonics of significant amplitudes will exist.
