Abstract
This paper is a case study of the installation of an automated manufacturing system in the Milton Keynes factory of Westland Helicopters. The financial and practical problems in producing components for helicopters are outlined and the decisions that were taken to solve these problems are described in detail. The benefits to the company in the form of increased productivity and reduced costs are reviewed.
