Abstract
This paper reviews and analyses the design and selection of the hardware of flexible manufacturing systems (FMS). The paper concentrates on systems for machining prismatic parts because this is the main application area of FMS. As the manning of systems influences hardware choices, a discussion on the influence of the manning of systems is included in the review. The paper is based on an investigation of American experiences of designing and operating systems. It is believed these experiences are very relevant to those in other countries who are planning or implementing systems.
