This paper describes the UKAEA project to decommission the Windscale advanced gas-cooled reactor. The plan is to take down the reactor itself, the heat exchangers and the sphere in which they are all contained. A special remote-handling machine is being developed which will cut up the radioactive items, and a facility is being built to package the waste for storage and disposal.
