It is often required that buried pipelines be hydrostatically tested before commissioning. This is particularly necessary where the pipeline is intended for gas transport. The author was in the team of designers for a 250 km ethylene pipeline in the UK and had the assignment of predicting the effect on the line pressure of a given temperature variation.
