Industrial robots have been increasingly used in industry to perform a variety of tasks. A study was carried out of the implications for the workforce of this new technology. Two categories of human task were found to be associated with the use of robots: one, common to all applications, concerned maintenance and programming while the other comprised the residual tasks which varied with different robot applications.
