Abstract
In a metal stamping operation, the major cost is that of materials; any efforts during the design stage to minimize scrap by selecting interlocking figures or by using careful layouts may result in substantial savings.
A number of template layout solutions has been developed but most of the methods require rather lengthy computation time even on a large computer. In addition, the solutions are not particularly geared towards metal stamping operations.
This paper presents a simplified heuristic solution of nesting metal stamping blanks with near optimum layouts. A complete analysis, including press capacity, coiled or strip stock, cost analysis etc. is also suggested.
