Abstract
The impact of the microprocessor on the control systems used in postal mechanization is considered both from the point of view of the effect upon equipment costs, and the intellectual demands placed upon the engineer. Particular emphasis is placed upon the value of the expertise and the disciplined approach which the engineer brings to the design function. It is concluded that developments in this field will continue apace and the engineer must rise to the challenge of applying this technology to an ever widening field.
