Abstract
The rise in oil prices in the late 1970s and the down-turn in the economy have reduced the demand for load from oil-fired generating plant. As a result of this a modified operating regime has been instituted for the three 676 MW units at the Inverkip Power Station of the South of Scotland Electricity Board. A single unit is maintained in service, the other two being held at one week's and one month's readiness. The paper describes the methods used to prevent deterioration of the plant in the cold, shut-down condition. The quickest possible starting from cold of the service unit is essential and the methods adopted, which enable full-load to be attained within eight hours, are also described.
