Abstract
The possibility of improving the stability of elliptical bearings by displacing the lobe centres has not received much attention so far. The present paper examines in some detail the effect of displacing the lobe centres on the load capacity, attitude angle and on elastic and damping coefficients. Ellipticity and horizontal displacement ratios have profound influence on bearing characteristics. An increase in ellipticity ratio increases vertical stiffness without much effect on horizontal stiffness; similarly an increase in horizontal displacement ratio increases horizontal stiffness. The numerical results given in the paper will help the designer to select suitable ellipticity and horizontal displacement ratio to have a bearing of desired static and dynamic properties.
