Abstract
An elastic analysis is developed which results in equations for the prediction of stresses at principal positions in the duct. These equations express the stress as a function of the aspect ratio and the ratio of the thickness of adjacent sides (opposite sides are taken to be of the same thickness). It is shown that for a fixed ‘longest side’ length, an optimum stress condition is achieved when the aspect ratio is two-to-one and the four sides have the same wall thickness.
