Abstract
The short-term feature of the medium-speed diesel engine is discussed in relation to fuel availability and changes in operating parameters. It is concluded that although fuel qualities will deteriorate during the next eighteen years there will still be a supply of fuels which are similar to those available today. By the year 2000 AD more fuels may be synthetic ones manufactured from coal, and some might be made from renewable resources. It is concluded that increases in engine power output will be achieved by increases in brake mean effective pressure and not engine speed. Ancillary equipment development will be required to enable the diesel engine to achieve its full potential in this period.
