Abstract
The object of this study was to clarify problems and to assess the feasibility of developing a marine Stirling engine in the near future. The paper reports results of field tests which have been carried out and describes the design and production of the heat exchanger, combustor and experimental engine. A 66 kW output was recorded with a mean working gas pressure of 10.8 MPa and a gas temperature of 700°C in a series of operating tests. The results of these studies and tests have convinced the establishment that the design method for the heat exchanger and the practical approach for the design of the sealing device provide the basis for an actual engine in the near future.
