The paper describes the measurement of combustion parameters which are required for the theoretical models such as Blizard and Keck (4). Quantitative analysis is performed on high speed photographs of flame propagation in a transparent piston engine with a typical combustion chamber design. From the measurements, the flame velocity, the flame radius and the volume burnt are determined directly. Then using a simple model of flame propagation the gas velocity just ahead of the flame is calculated, and then the entrained velocity is obtained. The entrained velocity which mainly remains constant, decreases towards the end of the flame propagation; this is believed to be due to the reduction in the eddy length scale and decay of the turbulence energy caused by the compression of the eddies.
