The concept, history, and operation of the Derailment Investigation Service maintained by the Research and Development Division of the British Railways Board is discussed, together with the nature and sources of the body of technical and numerical data which has been established. The mechanisms and causes of derailment are also described and the relevance of vehicle condition, track geometry, operating circumstances, and vehicle dynamics discussed.
