Abstract
The author shows how railway safety has developed, usually in reponse to public opinion, to the high standard of today. He traces the significant improvements in safety that have been achieved during the past 15 years and discusses the extent to which further improvements might be justified.
The lecture also raises the possibility thai, for certain lines, some relaxation of the current safety requirements, with consequent cost savings, might be made without a significant lowering of safety standards.
