The mathematical and experimental work described in this paper were carried out in the pump laboratory of the Rocket Propulsion Establishment (RPE) Westcott in 1955. In 1956 test runs took place with a ‘disc pump’ the impeller of which was described in the author's paper (l)t (Figs 19, 20 and 21)†
The information in the present paper was not made widely available by the RPE, at that time. Since the author's view the treatment used differs widely from that described in later publications (see References in Appendix 3); the results can be readily applied to practical design work.
