Abstract
This investigation into the hot rolling of aluminium slabs which have a thickness approaching the roll radius is divided into two parts. First, experimental load and torque values are compared with ones calculated from proposed shear plane configurations with compatible hodographs (velocity vector diagrams). Secondly, experimental slip line fields (fields of maximum shear strain lines) and hodographs are determined from measured displacements of an orthogonal grid, scribed on the central vertical longitudinal plane of a slab which had been rolled into a cobble and slit along this plane, the whole slab then being incrementally re-rolled.
