In the last 20 years, adoption of new vessel types and methods has helped to secure a three-fold increase in world catch. Studies of the performance of new designs, to ensure operational effectiveness at economic cost, have now led to further innovations. Intensified competition and scarcity of manpower necessitate a continuing programme of development. The object is to improve the availability and acceptability of a foodstuff to the consumer.
