Abstract
This paper describes a method for the design and evaluation of the performance characteristics of combustion driven high energy-rate forming machines which have since been given the name Petro-Forge. The treatment is based on the use of a number of simplifying parameters derived from results on an earlier model. The first part of the working stroke, involving the opening of the seal, has been treated numerically and used as a basis for a simple expression giving approximately the same result. Hence, the variations of the energy output with the individual design parameters have been examined. The application of the expression to the design and performance characteristics of a Mk II machine are finally discussed in comparison with the observed results.
