Abstract
It is considered that the majority of problems in the field of tribology that are currently responsible for operating difficulties and loss of production in the process industries arise through lack of application of existing experience or the results of research, rather than in limitations of fundamental understanding. This suggests a need for determining limits of commercial reliability based on experience. This paper attempts to define such limits, mainly as a stimulus to discussion, not only of the actual values themselves, but also how such values can be obtained, the limits refined and better guidance given to manufacturer and user alike.
