Abstract
In system design of a bulk materials handling plant it is essential, in the early stages, to be able to quickly assess the effects of various layouts and designs. A plant using a twin-hoist motor a.c. electric overhead travelling (e.o.t.) grabbing crane would require the study of various plant layouts. For any particular layout under investigation the total cost will be a combination of crane costs, civil and structural costs and power supply costs which are all interrelated. Use of the graphs and empirical equations contained in this paper will enable the appropriate crane data to be approximately determined such as crane cost, wheel loads and power consumption. The establishment of these facts will enable the plant layout engineer to determine the cost of the civil, structural and electrical sectors and hence the overall costs.
