Abstract
The recent history of developments in metallurgy and their impact on teaching are briefly surveyed. The general principles to be followed in designing courses in metallurgy for engineers are discussed and the importance of taking account of the type of engineer and the academic background of the class is stressed. Three types of syllabus are outlined and considered in relation to the various needs of classes of engineers.
