Abstract
During the war instances occurred of serious production difficulties that arose through the introduction of new materials of advantageous qualities from the design point of view, but with disastrous effects on output owing to difficulties in machining. A suggestion was made that the Institution might revive the activities of the Cutting Tools Research Committee by inaugurating systematic cooperative research on machinability of a fundamental character, and by organizing a conference covering various aspects of machinability.
At a Council Meeting of the Institution on 20th April 1945 a subcommittee of the Publications and Library Committee was appointed (see below) to consider the matter in detail, and to prepare a scheme for a series of papers, covering as wide a range as possible, to be discussed at the suggested conference.
