Abstract
The problem of utilizing or even disposing of wood refuse has engaged the attention of engineers for many years, and it has been the author's good fortune to have access to a plant for experimental purposes and the collection of data. This has enabled him to design a new plant which, although not entirely trouble-free, places at his disposal information hitherto unobtainable, and which is now available for the correct design of wood refuse silos. The author considers that his best course, in order to make the paper as practical and helpful as possible, will be to describe the plant which he himself has designed and erected, giving the results of his experiments, calculations, and running tests, and concluding with criticisms and suggestions. The subject can be broadly divided into three parts, as can be seen from Fig. 1; these are (1) Collection and delivery; (2) Storage and feed; and (3) Steam raising. Less knowledge is available under the second of these headings than under the others, and in view of the fact that problems of dust removal are well known, the author does not propose to do more than give a general description of that side of the work, but rather to include a more detailed account of storage and feed.
