Abstract
This paper, by reviewing the national statistics relating to double-deck buses, considers the change in the popularity of these buses over a period of years. Reference is made to the change from the orthodox front engined–rear entrance double-deck buses of past years to the present-day rear engined–front entrance buses and to the operational advantages and engineering disadvantages of the latter. A description is given of the main features of present-day double-deck vehicles and some comparisons of double- and single-deck buses are made. Consideration is then given to the future design of such buses from the point of view of construction, layout, performance, maintenance, and life. Finally, views are presented on various aspects of design and equipment which should, for operational reasons, be incorporated in future SELNEC vehicles.
