The choice between axial and centrifugal compressors is briefly discussed, and cost comparison applicable over a limited range is given. The present design trends and future prospects of both types of machine are considered. Methods of radial equilibrium calculations and compressor characteristic predictions are given as examples of the design tools which are available for effecting improvements in axial compressor aerodynamics, and in the evaluation of performance.
