Abstract
This report summarizes the work carried out by the author, the object of which was to reduce valve failures in large process compressor (> 500 hp). The initial stages of the report are concerned with describing the cyclic operation of a valve, and from this tentative description it is noted that certain parameters are of extreme importance. Using these parameters, the effect on valve life is then examined; finally, the theoretical proposals are compared with actual cases of valve failure, shown in photographs. A measure of the success of the work can be gauged from the fact that it has led in numerous cases to a 95 per cent reduction in all random valve failures. For the convenience of readers, the steps taken to achieve this result have been listed in the conclusions.
