Abstract
The description “industrial” is generally understood to apply to tractors built for industrial, constructional, and Public Works' usage. About 20 years ago agricultural tractors were modified by manufacturers, albeit modestly, to make them more suitable for industrial purposes. The special needs of this market, particularly for constructional work, soon involved more departures from the farm tractor specification but the basic economic advantages of using high volume components were retained for tractors of up to about 65 hp. The market requirements have been substantially met by three basic machines. This paper describes the special conditions and requirements on the main categories of small and medium tractor and indicates likely future trends on machines with world-wide sales appeal.
