Abstract
When diesel engines are installed in fighting vehicles they are subjected to various conditions which may critically affect their performance, reliability, or durability. These conditions can be classified as installational or environmental, and as they are interdependent they cannot be considered in isolation. This is best illustrated by engine rating, since not only does it dictate the performance level but also has a major influence on reliability and life and is itself determined by a number of installational and environmental factors. It is essential to view the problem of engine application as a whole and to apply the solutions not merely to the engine but to all its subsystems constituting the power pack, which must be regarded as an integrated unit.
