Abstract
The research reported in this paper has been directed towards making conventional diesel engines quieter by modifying the engine structure. The work has been concentrated on reducing the vibration levels of the external surfaces of the engine, particularly the thinly panelled areas such as the crankcase panels, water jacket panels, timing cover, sump, rocker cover, and tappet covers. Various treatments have been devised for these areas, and they have been applied to a six-cylinder in-line automotive engine and a three-cylinder tractor engine to give overall noise reductions of 5 dBA or more at full rated speed and load.
