Abstract
Some details are given of the development work which has led to the design of a range of marine-propulsion gearboxes. Materials for surface-hardened pinions mating with through-hardened wheels have been assessed in disc machines, pulsator test rigs, and back-to-back gear rigs. Models have been used to obtain information on fabricated wheel designs, and production wheels have been subjected to strain gauge, deflection, and vibration testing. A one-piece gearcase based upon the use of the minimum number of structural elements is described and flexible couplings are discussed.
