Abstract
By extending a previous steady-state analysis the dynamic behaviour of multi-recess hydrostatic journal bearings was analysed and a restricted closed form solution derived for motion about the position of zero eccentricity for a bearing with four recesses. This showed that dynamic instability occurs at and above a certain shaft speed, and that the shaft then precesses at a frequency of one half of the shaft speed. An experimental investigation is described and good agreement between the predicted and measured response of a bearing with four recesses was obtained for amplitudes up to an eccentricity ratio of about 0·3.
