Abstract
This paper describes the reasons for the selection and use of glandless pump motor units on certain hot water applications in C.E.G.B. power stations. For the duties concerned, high reliability with freedom from routine maintenance is of the utmost importance. In these instances the use of glandless pump units overcomes certain problems encountered which otherwise could detract from this aim, particularly with regard to pump glands where high pressures and temperatures are involved or where the exclusion of air ingress via the pump is desired. Applications are discussed in detail, followed by consideration of design requirements, features, and problems. A section is included on development and testing. Operating experiences are examined and reference is made to probable future trends.
