A theory has been developed to describe the evaporation and mixing of a liquid spray in a known gaseous flow field. A major departure from previous spray mixing work is the treatment of the detailed structure from a quasi-continuous medium basis rather than the traditional single-droplet approach, which does not take into account the interaction of the neighbouring droplets. The theory enables the centre-line of the spray, the evaporation, concentration, velocity, and density (hence, temperature) along the spray path, as well as the width of the mixing zone, to be calculated. The results of the analysis are compared with experimental data obtained from high-speed photography.
