Abstract
It is ever-increasingly important to find and develop new techniques for the manipulation of metal such that the utilization of metal is improved and subsequent machining operations are either substantially reduced or eliminated. When metal rolling as a process is utilized, more often than not substantial advantages such as improvement of physical characteristics and metallurgical properties are apparent. One of the main objectives of this paper is to bring to delegates' attention presently available processes and current developments in the field of cold gear rolling. The paper also outlines the interrelationship of warm and hot rolling to cold rolling, particularly with consideration to the present state of the art where limitations on cold rolling are imposed due to material plasticity and physical geometry considerations. The effects of current rolling processes and proposed development processes represent a radical departure from traditional manufacturing techniques.
