Abstract
These machines generally have a volumetric flow distribution, which although symmetrical about the core centre-line, increases from the end of the machine to maximum in the middle. The rise of volumetric flow is attributed to an axial increase of interpolar static pressure caused by change of kinetic to potential energy due to air bleed-off through the core ducts. Equations predicting the pressure losses for the rotor/stator combination are itemized, together with an expression for head generation by the salient poles. A comparison is made between predicted volumetric flow distribution and a machine test result.
