Abstract
The impact of component reliability on a major airline is discussed and the more frequent modes of failure of the various types of component are examined in detail. Accurate trouble-shooting of component defects is an increasing problem with the trend to greater system complexity and higher aircraft utilization, resulting in a high proportion of removals for unconfirmed faults. The methods of improving this situation are reviewed. It is concluded that in many areas insufficient effort is made to apply in-service experience to the design of new components.
