Abstract
The reliability of a component is interpreted as depending upon the accuracy with which it is possible to predict its standard of performance such that an acceptable working condition is sustained up to the point when maintenance or replacement is scheduled. Possible causes of component defects of a magnitude sufficient to give rise to unreliability are discussed from the viewpoint of a user of components, and particularly as obtaining in the mining industry. The discussion of the subject ranges from the pre-design investigation and specification stages to the means by which defects may be determined or their effect minimized during use.
