Abstract
This paper describes a laboratory investigation of the factors governing the formation of hard layers of mixed tin oxides on tin-base white-metal bearing surfaces in marine power units. A galvanic corrosion cell has been developed which produces hard black layers identical with those found on failed bearings. The influence of temperature, of oil and electrolyte composition, and of the composition of the bearing metal and its substrate on this anodic oxidation has been investigated.
