Abstract
The development of artificial limbs has often been as a result of clinical experiece rather than by engineering design. This paper discusses the design problem from first principles in the light of current research. Topics presenting special difficulties are isolated—in particular, methods of control for artificial limbs, which are discussed in more detail. As a result it is possible to specify priorities for further research, urgently needed if powered artificial arms are to be worthy of modern engineering technology.
